If you have not seen the band rehearse, you are missing a real treat. They stand at attention, motionless. They ignore the sweat dripping from their nose. When they are given a command, they execute the command without comment. They RUN from one spot to another in order to get that last run-thru before they break for the day.
Parental involvement also ensures the safety of the band members. Occasionally, the crowd gets unruly after a performance or football game. The chaperones have the experience to know how to get the band home safely.
Parental involvement also ensures the financial ability to attend the activities that the band members cherish. It takes a lot of money to move a group this large. Going to the various competitions and performances serves to polish the show. A polished and finely tuned show is what earns the VBODA Honor Band designation. We need help constantly in the concession stand and bingo hall. We also need help with the other fund raisers we will undertake thruout the year.
Along with polishing the show, there are a lot of props and equipment that must be moved onto and off of the field. During the competitions, the field equipment must be set up and removed in a certain time. If the "Pit Crew" cannot accomplish the set-up and removal in time, the band suffers from reduced points. We need parental involvement in the pit crew.
Please fill out a School Volunteer Application Form and get involved any way you can. It doesn't have to be consistent. You may be the one who makes a difference between making a trip or staying home.
